Why aren’t more people freaking out about the new Venezuelan labor law?

dancepunksnotdead:

You know, the one that gives housewives/full-time mothers a pension— wages for housework?

It’s ONLY A HUGE VICTORY FOR FEMINISM, SOCIALISM, AND WOMEN OF COLOR. Not a big deal or anything. Tumblr is mysteriously silent about this.

What yes this is fantastic

i always seem to follow all the nice people/ nice parts of the fandom

the bad parts of the fandom seem like some far off land that i only hear about through folklore and the tales of swarthy fishermen

It all matters. And it’s all notable, if for no other reason that so much of it has nothing to do with Holmes. When it does, it illuminates him or teaches him a lesson. (He accepts Ms. Hudson’s gender preferences without question — that’s good! He makes note of Watson’s menstrual cycle and gets called out for misogyny — that’s also good!) The world of Elementary doesn’t support a Holmes whose intellect justifies dickweedery; Holmes has to negotiate that as much as he does his cases, keeping just enough bullshit in reserve to give Watson something to roll her eyes about occasionally.

- Elementary Demonstrates The Right Way To Update A Classic Hero (io9)

This entire article wonderfully, beautifully articulates a lot of the wonderful (and not so wonderful) things about Elementary. But I think the highlighted sentence is my favourite, and one of the things that Elementary really really got right from the canon material and that a lot of other adaptations have failed at (even House), that is those wonderful points where Dr. Watson thinks and even tells Holmes he’s being a jackass.

“Wash has, effectively, been trapped for a very long time now; trapped by his association with Freelancer, trapped by the head full of trauma Epsilon left him with, and trapped very literally by what seems to be a serious prison sentence. By season eight Wash has so little left to lose that he is willing to embark on a desperate abandonment of his moral fetters in an attempt to secure some sort of freedom, despite being a frankly awful villain. He has hit a very gritty rock-bottom.

The S8 conclusion thus represents a widening of opportunities for Wash, rather than a narrowing. First and foremost stands the fact that he is no longer in prison. It would undoubtedly be difficult, but there is the possibility that once the manhunt dies down, he can build himself a new identity and re-enter the civilian life; even if he chooses not to, even if it’s not able to happen for some years, the option is still there, and options are important when your life has been filled with little but hurdles that need navigating.

The second and, to my mind, more significant opportunity it opens is for healing. My post-Epsilon Wash keywords are bitter, repressed, and neurotic, and the S8 ending sets up an environment where he finally has room to address those traits. There are no missions he has to run. There’s no training he has to engage in. The hunt for the Director has been taken out of his hands, and his companions are a group of oddballs who both know about the terrible things he’s done and expressly don’t care. It’s easy to picture him moving from dazed hopelessness to picking up routines because he’s incapable of sitting still, to refining those routines because, hey, there’s not really any pressure anymore, and he’s allowed to do things for no other reason than because he wants to…

Being forgiven by people you betrayed helps with the bitterness. Having space and time to work through your thoughts at your own pace helps with the repression. Living with a pack of people who will call you out on your weirder tics while at the same time avoid heaping judgement upon your head because they’re all weird too helps with the neurosis. Wash is never again going to be a cheerful idealist, but he has a lot of reasons and methods to let him loosen up for the first time in a very long time.”

This was originally part of a longer spiel about how I felt the season ten ending was less positive than season eight’s. Assuming the trailer is telling the truth and that the BG crew were in fact trying to get ‘home’ at some point, the main bite of my argument has been de-fanged and there’s not much point in trying to fuss about facts I am no longer sure of.

So instead we can have the section in which I bubbled happily for a bit about Washingblue feelings! It’s probably more fun to read anyway.

This is accurate and wonderful and I love it.

WAIT HOLD THE FUCK UP

IS ‘MRS’ JUST MR’S

LIKE BELONGING TO MR

OMG

Mr comes from the French monsieur, which I think literally translates as ‘my lord’ and basically just means master, and Mrs comes from maistre which is the feminine form of master, so actually—for once—no.

This was an extremely relevant comment and I thank you for educating me :D

Fanimeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

mk-otro:

Heya,

I know this is last-minute like everything else of late but I was wondering if everyone was already permanently settled on their Fanime Artist Alley table spaces.

If anyone wants to be booth number 1, I’m still open to the possibility of moving to be closer to Lambency/Corrin Forte (which would be awesome, really). Yes. If not you, the reader, then send this along to anyone you know who has an AA space. Drop me a line or something, I’ll try responding in the few days we have left before con time.
